The New York Times published this article a couple days ago. It’s the obituary for a man named John Fairfax who, in my opinion, lived a fascinating life of adventure. As I read through his life’s experiences summed up in a couple pages I wondered what drove him and what contained him. There are many men and women with a desire to seek adventure and try new things. They are driven by a love of nature or need for excitement or some other thing they can’t resist. But there is also something he had that contained him and focused his drive. He was educated enough or smart enough or strong enough or lucky enough to survive to 73 which is certainly saying considering the lifestyle he lived.
The article reminded me of the book Wild at Heart. I’m just a tame fellow at a desk with a clean shirt, a cup of coffee and a doctors appointment at nine. But,secretly I get a little rush from reading about guys like this. Makes me want to wrestle a jaguar! Not really.
